Selecting Potato Ingredient Packaging for Storage, Transport and Factory Handling

Start at the receiving line

Pack selection should reflect how the ingredient is received, stored, opened and dosed. Smaller bags, larger bulk bags and other formats create different handling and exposure conditions. Confirm the formats actually available for the grade rather than assuming every size is offered.

Describe pallet and lifting equipment, opening method, dust control and batch size. A pack that lowers freight cost may increase labour or create an awkward partial-pack inventory in the factory.

Match protection to the distribution conditions

Evaluate the package's barrier, seal integrity and mechanical strength for the intended storage and route. Moisture exposure can affect powder handling and condition; repeated handling can damage seals or outer layers. Assess the complete pack, including the liner and closure, rather than judging only the outer bag material.

Any food-contact requirement should be confirmed for the actual packaging and market. An attractive printed bag does not establish suitable protective performance.

Consider storage and partial use

Agree storage conditions, stock rotation and the treatment of opened packs. Identify lots and dates so that partial quantities remain traceable. Avoid relying on a supplier's unopened shelf-life statement to justify an arbitrary period after opening.

Compare the pack size with normal production consumption. When partial use is frequent, evaluate resealing, contamination prevention, weighing accuracy and the risk of mixing lots. Include these costs in the packaging decision.

Validate handling before bulk adoption

Trial the proposed pack through unloading, storage, opening and feeding. Record damage, spillage, dust, time and remaining material. Confirm labels remain readable and the pack can be handled using the site's safe procedures.

Choose on total usable cost and product protection. The final specification should identify the agreed material and construction, nominal contents, marking and handling requirements, with changes subject to review.
