How to Read a Potato Ingredient Specification Sheet
Start with identity and version
Check the product name, grade code, composition, treatment, manufacturer or supply route, document version and date. Resolve whether powder means whole-potato material, starch or a pregelatinized product. Similar names can conceal materially different ingredients.
Confirm the intended use and whether the document represents a general product description or an agreed purchasing specification. A marketing sheet and an acceptance specification serve different purposes.
Read every number with its method
For moisture, check the basis and method. For particle size, identify the sieve or other measurement and whether a distribution is provided. For viscosity, require the preparation, concentration, temperature and instrument conditions needed to interpret the result.
Units, minimums, maximums and ranges must be unambiguous. A typical value describes an expected characteristic; it is not necessarily a guaranteed limit. Ask which values will be measured or reported for each lot.
Separate safety, claims and functionality
Review relevant safety limits and sampling requirements alongside composition, allergen and other declarations. Confirm their applicability to the product and destination. A claim on a specification should have a defined basis and must not be inferred from an unrelated certificate.
Functional suitability still needs an application test where process performance is critical. A starch can meet its listed chemistry while failing the customer's particular heating or pumping sequence.
Turn the document into a receiving decision
Agree which tests are performed by the supplier and which by the buyer, how samples are retained and how disagreements are resolved. Include packaging, storage, shelf life and change notification. Record the approved version in the purchase order or quality agreement.
A useful final check is simple: could a receiving inspector use this document to decide whether the delivered lot is acceptable? If the answer depends on an undefined method or an unwritten promise, the specification is not yet complete.
Specification approval checklist
| Question | Acceptable evidence | Unresolved issue |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Grade, composition and supply identity | An ambiguous powder or starch name |
| How is it measured? | Method, units and preparation | A viscosity number without conditions |
| What is accepted? | Explicit limits and application criteria | A typical value treated as a guaranteed limit |
| What happens when it changes? | Version control and notification agreement | Unannounced grade or site substitution |
